Possible Breast Implant Complications;
1. Haematomas: less than 2%
2. Sensory changes: 15% dysesthesia or anaesthesia may be permanent if still present after the first year - caused by damage to intercostal nerves.
3. Infection: 1-2%
4. Scars: Hypertrophic scars may result in inframammary fold.
5. Asymmetry: Associated with breast size and shape, with pocket dissection or capsular contraction.
6. Implant extrusion: Caused by infection, implant folds or tight brassieres.
7. Contour irregularities: Rupture of gel implant with encapsulation of extruded gel.
8. Capsular contraction: Is a capsule of scar tissue. This can become thickened with resulting breast firmness.
9. Leaking implants or intracapsular rupture or deflation with saline implants (from valve failure) + / - 2%
10. Research has shown no link between breast cancer and breast implants. Similarly, there is no association with connective tissue diseases.
11. Altered nipple sensation: 15%. It can be less sensitive, partially or totally numb; considered permanent if still present after 1 year. Occurs more with the larger, wider base width implants.
